After some research on the fascinating history of the Coles Bay region, we named our restaurant after the French Corvette, Le Ge`ographe, captained by Nicholas Baudin, one of two ships in the French expedition led by him from 1800 to 1803. The expedition was commissioned by Napoleon and led by Baudin, to map the coast of New Holland (now Australia).
Sailing on these ships were zoologists, mineralogists, astronomers, geographers, gardeners and artists - who recorded and gathered an amazing wealth of information, (including taking back to France preserved and live animals). Their documentation and drawings of people, plants and animals changed European perceptions of New Holland and left their mark on our local place names.
